The Tanker War is Back - And This Time It's Global

The war between the United States and Iran has entered its seventh month with no exit in sight, and the second week of September 2026 marks its most dangerous escalation yet.

In the biggest wave of attacks on commercial shipping since the conflict began, U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers on September 8th, bringing the total to 10 Iranian tankers destroyed since September 5th in direct retaliation for Iranian attacks on U.S. naval forces. Iran responded within hours by striking 10 vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. strikes, including attacks on anchored commercial ships in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. 

CENTCOM confirmed this week that 101 Iranian or Iran-affiliated commercial vessels have now been redirected as part of the ongoing U.S. naval blockade.

Iran has launched a concerted effort to more aggressively target U.S. naval forces to degrade America's ability to enforce the blockade. Since September 4th, Iran has fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier, destroyers, and a Marine vessel. U.S. officials described some attacks as "close calls." Intelligence warnings now say Iran may be using more sophisticated weapons including the new Qassem Basir medium-range ballistic missile with maneuverable reentry vehicle technology. 

U.S. officials have also raised concerns that Russia and China may be providing targeting assistance, including satellite imagery of U.S. warships. 

2. The Cluster Munition Escalation
On September 8-9, Iran fired ballistic missiles containing cluster munitions at Muwaffaq Salti Airbase in Azraq, Jordan, a key U.S. base. The attack caused minimal damage but signals a shift - cluster munitions disperse over a wide area to maximize casualties. Iran has also attacked U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain in recent days. 

3. Oil Shock - The Economic Weapon
The tanker attacks have triggered a global energy crisis. At least seven oil tankers have been struck in and beyond the Persian Gulf since Tuesday. The war and fuel price surge have helped drive President Trump's popularity to record lows. 

Iran is framing its actions as enforcing its own "sanctions regime" in the Strait of Hormuz, warning any vessel entering a "restricted area" without coordination will be sanctioned. 

4. White House Split - How Long Will This Last?
A major divide has emerged in Washington. Top advisers including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have privately warned President Trump that the conflict could extend through the remainder of his presidency to January 2029. 

That contrasts sharply with President Trump's public statement Wednesday that he expects the war to end "immediately after" the U.S. midterm elections in November, claiming Iran cannot sustain resistance. 

Regional Spillover: The Axis Mobilizes

Iran's retaliation is now being channeled through its proxy network:

• Houthis in Yemen launched ballistic missile and drone attacks on Saudi cities Khamis Mushait and Abha, targeting King Khalid Air Base, energy infrastructure, and attempting to outflank Yemeni government forces along the Red Sea coast to threaten shipping in the Bab al Mandeb. 
• Iraqi militias: An Iranian-backed network operating under senior IRGC Colonel Hamed Abdollahi has conducted multiple drone attacks, including a September 10 drone strike on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline. Iraq closed three border crossings with Iran on September 12 to investigate. 
• Strait of Hormuz Control: Iran's attempt to formalize tolls and control in the strait met resistance - Bahrain refused to participate until attacks stop, Saudi Arabia demanded indefinite postponement, and even Oman opposes mandatory fees.
